Cox Urges Support for Local Candidates at Volunteer Breakfast

CHESTERFIELD – More than eighty volunteers and supporters were on hand for Delegate M. Kirkland “Kirk” Cox’s (R – Colonial Heights) campaign volunteer breakfast on Saturday, September 10th, at the historic Swift Creek Mill Theatre.

After a welcome from Colonial Heights Republican Committee Chairman John Wood, Joe Horbal introduced Delegate Cox. Horbal described Cox as, “a family man, a leader in the community and his church, and a true dedicated public servant.” Horbal has served as Chesterfield County’s Commissioner of Revenue since 1989.

In his remarks, Cox expressed his appreciation to everyone in attendance for their continued support over the years, “I very much appreciate the outstanding efforts of our volunteers to spread the word about my campaign. I want all voters in the 66th District to know that I do not take their votes and support for granted, and that I will continue to work hard to represent our shared values in Richmond.”

Cox is unopposed in his bid for a 12th term after having collected 611 signatures to qualify for re-election, far above the 125 signatures required.

Cox also highlighted the importance of the upcoming local elections in Chesterfield County. “Our founding fathers under the federalism concept gave state governments more power so they could be more responsive to the citizens affected the most.” He stressed the importance of public service and the work that our local elected officials do. “It is important that we elect local officials who share our values because they have the most impact on our lives,” Cox said.

He also stressed that all the candidates at the breakfast are dedicated to public service citing examples for each of the candidates in attendance. Incumbents Senator Steve Martin, Commissioner Joe Horbal, Bermuda Supervisor Dorothy Jaeckle, and School Board members Omarh Rajah (Matoaca) and David Wyman (Dale) all were able to attend. Challenger candidates Cliff Bickford (Dale Supervisor), Steve Elswick (Matoaca Supervisor) and Carrie Coyner (Bermuda School Board) were also in attendance at the event.

Cox concluded his remarks by encouraging everyone in attendance to help our Republican supported candidates up for election this year. “It is not just about winning, but helping to get our country back on track for a strong economic future and to support our common values. Your efforts will make a difference.”

Donald Williams, Chairman of the Chesterfield County Republican Committee, closed the program by thanking Delegate Cox for his dedicated service to Chesterfield County and asking the volunteers to work together as a team to help elect the slate of Republican supported candidates running in Chesterfield County.

At the close of the breakfast, several of the candidates present discussed the importance of the upcoming election.

Dorothy Jaeckle, running for a second term as Supervisor for the Bermuda District, stated, “I am glad to be here this morning. Kirk has always been a big help to me when we worked together to address areas of concern to the voters in the Bermuda District. For this election our primary focus is getting out the vote on November 8th.”

Carrie Coyner, candidate for the Bermuda District representative on the School Board, said, “The enthusiastic response from Bermuda District residents in support of my School Board campaign has been overwhelming. The support from my community, including distinguished public servants like Kirk Cox, has solidified the importance of victory in November. Residents said they are ready for a new voice, new ideas, and a new direction for our schools. I appreciate Delegate Cox’s views and support on running for the Chesterfield School Board.”
