General Assembly Update: Post-Election Day Thoughts & Remembering Veterans Day
While I did not have any opposition in this year’s election, I want you to know that I was very grateful to receive the votes of 10,715 constituents in the 66th House of Delegates District on Tuesday. I do not take those votes for granted, and I pledge to continue to work hard to retain that strong support and to represent the interests of all the citizens of the 66th District in southern/western Chesterfield County and Colonial Heights. In the coming weeks, I will be introducing legislation for the 2012 Session and am looking forward to discussing those bills with you. I can tell you now that my top priority will continue to be on helping businesses create new jobs and opportunities and ensuring that Virginia remains the best place to live and raise a family.
In Chesterfield, there were a number of contested elections which resulted in a few changes on the Board of Supervisors and the School Board. I look forward to working with new and returning members to build on our record of close cooperation between county and state.
I want to especially thank the 1,843 voters that went to the polls in Colonial Heights. While there were only 3 names on the ballot and no contested races, it was gratifying to see so many citizens still going to the polls to show their support for the elected officials running for reelection. I am particularly grateful to the more than 50 poll workers who covered the polls from open to close to thank everyone for voting. You set a fine example of civic responsibility.
As the House Majority Leader, I want to note that this was an historic Virginia election that received national attention. Although much of the press coverage before and after Election Day was on the Virginia Senate, history was made in the House of Delegates elections. The House Republican Caucus gained seven seats and will have 68 members in the 2012 General Assembly Session, the highest number of Republican Delegates ever in the history of the Commonwealth. We are thankful for this strong show of support for the Republican House across Virginia. We look forward to working with Governor McDonnell and a working Senate Republican majority as we press forward on private-sector job creation, government reform, transportation, and other issues important to all Virginians.
Looking ahead to the 2012 Session, I will again be sending out weekly Session updates on the key issues in the General Assembly. I will also be posting the weekly updates on my website, www.kirkcox.com, along with all press releases, photos, and videos from the General Assembly. In the coming weeks, you will have a chance to give me your feedback on the important issues facing Virginia through my 2012 General Assembly Survey, which will be available on my website.
In closing, I want to thank the active duty military service members and veterans for their service to our country. On Veterans Day, we pause as a nation to recognize the service and sacrifice of so many of our fellow citizens that have allowed us to live in a free society. I encourage you to attend one of the local ceremonies in our area tomorrow in recognition and honor of the many sacrifices our veterans and active duty service members have made. The Colonial Heights Veterans Day Ceremony will be at 11:00 a.m. at the city’s Veterans’ Memorial on the south end of the Boulevard. I will be laying a wreath at the Chesterfield County Veterans Day ceremony at 2:00 p.m. at the Chesterfield Court House. Additionally, many local businesses and restaurants will offer veterans and active service members’ special discounts on Veterans Day to show their appreciation. Please click here to see an extensive list of businesses that will be offering special discounts and deals. Finally, Governor McDonnell has marked this Veterans Day with a special proclamation – please click here to view.
