Update from Delegate Kirk Cox

It seems like a few short (and quite warm) days ago we were celebrating Independence Day, and now we’re already at the end of July. Time certainly flies!

In this email, I’ll share with you what I’ve been doing over the past few weeks and make you aware of three upcoming events.

Campaign Update

Our campaign is hard at work! We hosted our second Super Saturday this July, where our team spoke with voters in Chesterfield’s Birkdale neighborhood. We even heard from some of my former students from when I taught US Government at Manchester High School.

Serving our community is my passion, and it’s what I hope to continue do after the November elections. You can sign up to volunteer with the campaign by clicking here.

Commending Resolution

On July 4th, I presented a copy of HJ 894 to Jerry Chenault, commending him on being named Legionnaire of the Year for the Virginia. Prior to being named Legionnaire of the Year for Post 284, he received the same honor from the post, Legion District 11, and the Eastern District of Virginia.

Jerry, a retired Army officer, leads the children and youth programs at American Legion Post 284. During 2016, nearly 400 events were held for children and youth resulting in over $90,000 in cash and goods being donated to the benefit of 18,000 children and youth.

Thank you Jerry, Post 284, and all members of the American Legion nationwide, for your tremendous work in bettering our communities.

Tax Free Weekend

Virginia’s annual back-to-school tax free weekend will take place Friday, August 4th through Sunday, August 6th. During this sale, qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and other items can be purchased tax free.

Certain conditions do apply, and you should make yourself fully aware of them before you head out shopping. Click here to view a handy list of items that do and do not apply, compiled by the state tax department.

100% Rating from NFIB

I was honored to receive a 100% rating from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) in recognition of my support for legislation that cuts burdensome red tape and allows small businesses to thrive.

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, providing countless Virginians will good-paying jobs to support themselves and their families. But when government over regulates, we stifle small businesses and prevent them from expanding and hiring new employees. I’ll continue to support legislation that reduces unnecessary red tape, so that small businesses in our community can operate in the way that they see fit, not how the government sees fit.

National Night Out

National Night Out will take place in Chesterfield on Tuesday, August 1st. National Night Out is an evening where community members are encouraged to leave the comforts of their A/C and head outdoors to enjoy time with neighbors and the police. Local law enforcement works to raise awareness for drug and crime prevention efforts and strengthen the relationship between police and the community.

Coats Disease Awareness Day

During the 2017 session, I carried legislation designating August 17th as Coats Disease Awareness Day in Virginia. My team and I worked closely with Elke Gibbs and her son Jaxon to advance this bill through the legislative process to become law. Coats disease causes abnormal growth in the blood vessels located behind the retina, and can lead to decreased vision or blindness. Typically, this disease only affects one eye, not both.

On Thursday, August 17th, a “kNOw Coats” Glow Run will take place at the Chester Family YMCA to help raise awareness for this rare eye disease. In addition to the glow run, there will be face painting, eye screenings by the Colonial Heights Lions Club, and a contest to see who “glows” the most. I’ll be at this event, and I hope you’ll be there, too.

Outside of session, you can contact me in my district office via phone at 526-5135; by email at delkcox@house.virginia.gov; or by US mail at PO Box 1205, Colonial Heights, VA 23834.
