January 16, 2019

Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Kirk Cox on Wednesday welcomed the American Legion State Leadership and the Joint Leadership Council of Veteran Services Organizations to the Capitol. Speaker Cox discussed efforts to support our veterans and listened to the group’s ideas on how ensure that Virginia is the most veteran friendly state in the United States.

“I have always been a staunch supporter of our veterans and am proud to have championed over 130 pieces of veterans legislation during my time in the General Assembly,” said Speaker Cox (R – Colonial Heights). “As Speaker, I will continue to support veterans and active duty military and their families by pushing for legislation that shows Virginia is welcoming to the men and women who serve our great country.”

The JLC members spent the morning visiting legislators and advocating for their seven legislative priorities for this 2019 session. The JLC is a state board whose mission is to provide advice and assistance to the Governor, General Assembly and the Department of Veterans Services (DVS) on matters of concern to the veterans’ community and provides a conduit of information to and from the veteran service organizations (VSO) on policy and legislation, pending and enacted, as well as information on existing services. The board currently is comprised of 25 VSO representatives from around the Commonwealth.

Cox added, ”As a legislator one of the most important parts of our job is hearing directly from subject matter experts on issues that impact the people we serve. I value opportunities like this to meet with the men and women who have served our country with honor and distinction to learn where the state is succeeding and where we can make improvements when it comes to veteran related issues.”

Wednesday was also The American Legion’s Day on Capitol Square. Members also visited general assembly members and briefed them on the JLC and other priorities. Speaker Cox met with the leadership of the American Legion Department of Virginia to include the Department Commander, Tom Queck, Department President, Rose Moore, National Auxiliary Legislative Chairman, Lisa Chaplin, and the Department Legislative Chairman and their JLC representative, Rick Oertel.
