COLONIAL HEIGHTS — Former House Speaker Kirk Cox (R-Colonial Heights) released the below statement following the nominated of Delegate Todd Gilbert to serve as the 57th Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates:

“Congratulations to Speaker-designee Todd Gilbert for being nominated by the House Republican Caucus as the next Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates.

“When I was first elected as Majority Leader by the House Republican Caucus in 2010, I quickly appointed Todd to serve as my assistant. I believed he would make a dynamic floor leader and expert debater, something he has proven time after time. He has a firm grasp of the House Rules and has made his mark as a valuable member of the chamber.

“During my tenure as Speaker, Todd served as Majority Leader. He was instrumental in leading our caucus and once again proved to be a capable debater. I remain grateful for Todd’s support during these particular two years.

“Todd also deserves effusive praise for leading the House Republican Caucus through our last two years in the minority. Todd put in the hard work necessary to retain our House majority.

“On a more personal note, Julie and I count Todd and Jennifer as special friends. Serving in elective office is made easier by the support of family, something I can personally attest to. Todd is lucky to be surrounded by a loving family. We pray not only for Todd’s success as Speaker, but for Jennifer and the Gilbert children.

“I know that Todd, along with Terry Kilgore, Kathy Byron, and Jay Leftwich, will make Virginia proud. I am confident that Todd and his team will lead the chamber in an honorable manner while advancing key policy initiatives that strengthen our Commonwealth.”
